Oh, you don’t “do scary movies.”

Well, what if they’re slyly funny, engaging and smart like “Get Out?”

Jordan Peele’s directorial debut does a lot of things right, but no scene is more chilling than when his protagonist Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) gets hypnotized by his girlfriend’s mom (Catherine Keener) and drawn into the Sunken Place. It’s like the Upside Down in “Stranger Things” if you replace Demogorgons with deathly solitude. Chris’ “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”-inspired weekend goes from weird to downright horrifying during this scene because he’s starting to figure out who’s actually on the menu.

“How far are you willing to follow a corpse and an emotionally unstable man as they adventure through the woods farting, fighting a bear and digging into the particulars of humanity? My answer is a long way. I loved this film and its insistent weirdness.”

This movie is easily one of my favorites this year. It feels like a handmade gift of a movie.

“Writer/director Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Lobster” is an absurd, tensely wound film that operates by its own rules. It builds a dystopian future that eerily mirrors today but masks itself with a great poker face. It’s as bizarre as it is hilarious. Satirical as it is deadly serious about its unconventional guidelines. I left energized about the thoughtful film and wanted to jump on a mountain to scream about its impact on me.”

For as quickly as Captain America can run, he sure takes his sweet time in “Captain America: Civil War.” This is easily the slowest-paced Marvel entry to date.

Basically, I was not wild about this comic book adaptation.

I took a stab at reviewing “Green Room” which is an insanely intense movie hitting theaters this weekend. Also, Maeby Fünke is in it.
