An Okie tune for your next ’80s dance party.
An Okie tune for your next ’80s dance party.
Real life is mundane. Movies help us escape.
They take us very far from the everydayness that we reserve for loved ones, co-workers and anyone within earshot.
I shouldn’t have been surprised to discover Carly Gwin’s new EP is excellent.
However, I was surprised when I heard she hand’t squared away any promo photos. We threw together something simple and fun to match her nostalgia-tinged album cover. It’s a photo of her when she was very young and holding a giant bubble. Check it out below.
I’m happy with how these turned out. More photos here.
I caught up with my Tulsa-based buddy Kalyn Fay when she needed to turn around an entry into the Tiny Desk Contest real fastlike. Not bad at all for a new song and all in one take.
It’s crazy how much talent there is in this state.
“We let ourselves be a living, breathing thing for a second and talk to ourselves with our instruments and those are the most fun parts. I know that any band that even dares utter the word ‘jamming’ can be in a lot of trouble. I think for us, finding out how much of that we can do to keep ourselves excited enough and invested enough and engaged enough to be putting on a good show. Having people respond to that is what gives this band life.”
That’s Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith on the band’s excellent live show. Did you just miss them in OKC last weekend? well then don’t be a dummy and miss them in Tulsa later this year at Cain’s Ballroom.
Here’s my full interview.
I like a music video with some sweat in it.
I’ll remember this night as that one time Cloris Leachman played me “Clair de Lune” on a piano.
Here’s a short story about visiting the set of a new movie that was shot in Oklahoma.
I found the drinkin’ song of 2017. Cheers.
Every now and again there’s a concert so good that it reminds me why I spend half my year going to them. This was one of them.
Pinegrove’s frontman Evan Stephens Hall was driving across the country because his grandmother was too old to drive her car. So, he picked up the vehicle in California and made his way back to New Jersey. This Norman house show was one of his stops.
Hall tested a lot of new material and played several tracks from “Cardinal,” an album highlight of 2016. Check out some more pics below.
Looking back at 2016, I must have never shut up.
I collected most of my interviews with national and touring artists, and I didn’t recall doing half of these. The journalism world moves pretty fast so here’s me attempting to slow down enough to enjoy it.
“At the historic Sun Studio, engineers Ples Hampton and Curry Weber produced and recorded an EP for 10-piece rock ‘n’ roll band Matt Stansberry & The Romance; the performances will also appear as part of the studio’s ongoing Sun Sessions series on PBS.”
That’s an excerpt from a trade magazine my photo work appeared in recently. It’s called “Mix” and it reminded how much fun this trip to Memphis was. Check out the article here.
You can see all my photos from that weekend here.
A very merry Christmas from myself and the Spy FM + Fowler VW family.
I had a lot of fun decorating the van with Christmas lights and editing a documentary of Oklahoma’s most musical holiday party. For the past six years, Blackwatch Studios and Fowler VW team up to create an original holiday album. This year’s was especially good. Give it a listen here.
A special thanks to Labrys and the Chelsey Cope gang for performing in the cold. Also, Josh did a great job driving even though his feet got super cold from the lack of a heater.
When people give you a heads up that a unicorn is going to get wheeled throughout a concert crowd, it doesn’t actually sink in until you’re standing in the way of the glowing, horse-sized creature. Confetti, balloons and a Griswold family christmas amount of lights accompany most Flaming Lips shows but there’s always a surprise, too.

It took us six years to finally get Travis Linville in the van.
Worth the wait.
Champagne was popped, pineapples were smashed and bags of potato chips were thrown into the crowd.
That’s the norm for a Rae Summered show, and the hip-hop duo landed in Oklahoma City just days after hitting No. 1 because of a great song and a ridiculous internet challenge. It was a rowdy concert filled with a sold-out crowd. I’d love to see more shows here because it’s tough to beat the bouncy wooden floors and old school appeal of the Farmers Market.
Check out all my photos from that evening here.
