As soon as I heard the band name Poolboy, I knew that I had to make an underwater music video.
There really wasn’t a question about it. I messaged the band and got an affirmation in less than hour. Summer was still a couple of months away at the time, but Poolboy didn’t waste any time collecting old bathing suits, throwaway instruments and an appetite for destruction. The trio recorded a 7” worth of material at Blackwatch Studios in a week, and the morning of the shoot I heard the track “The Thing About It Is” for the first time. Two hours later, we wrapped the shoot. Sunburned and hungry, Tim Katz and I rested after flexing our slow motion and underwater cinematography muscles. It was a great shoot, and we aimed to keep it as fun as humanly possible. I think we nailed it.
Special thanks to Brandon Land for his art direction. He based the supers on the “Street Fighter II” box and John Carpenter’s “The Thing.”
Update: You can listen to “The Thing About It Is” and three other tracks on the “Soda Kids EP.”
